MILLETS / POWDER: Millets are a group of highly variable small-seeded grasses, widely grown around the world as cereal crops. Often called “Nutri-Cereals,” they are far superior to rice and wheat in terms of mineral density, fiber, and glycemic stability.
The “Big Three” Millets
- Finger Millet (Ragi): The ultimate calcium powerhouse, containing nearly 344mg of calcium per 100g. It is essential for bone density and is a premier weaning food for infants.
- Sorghum (Jowar): Rich in polyphenols and antioxidants, Jowar is excellent for heart health and managing cholesterol levels.
- Pearl Millet (Bajra): A dense source of iron and folic acid, making it a natural remedy for anemia and a great energy booster during colder months.
The “Small” Powerhouse Millets
- Foxtail Millet: Exceptionally high in Vitamin B12, which is crucial for nervous system maintenance and healthy skin.
- Barnyard Millet: The “weight-loss champion” due to its high fiber and low-calorie density. It has the lowest glycemic index of all millets.
- Little Millet: Packed with essential fatty acids (like myristic and palmitic acid) that support brain health and cell repair.
- Kodo Millet: Rich in lecithin, which strengthens the nervous system and provides a significant number of antioxidants.
- Browntop Millet: Noted for its superior fiber content (roughly 12.5%), making it the best variety for gut cleansing and constipation.
